CDN Recommendations and Warnings

Posted: Jan 19, 2010

Howdy folks,

Just thought I'd start a new thread on this topic as we recently had to go CDN shopping and something like this would've been helpful for us during that time. I encourage you to post your recommendations and warnings on CDNs here. Share what your experiences have been. Here is what we've learned over the past few months in our dealings in this area.

SIMPLECDN - www.simplecdn.com
We first tried out SimpleCDN. Their interface and admin are for the most part pretty straight forward. Which is good because their support is almost non-existent. There were occasions where we submitted tickets for help and never got a response. They just basically ignored us. But they were sure to let us know if our account needed more money in it.

Also they told us that they could do pseudo-streaming ... it turned out that apparently they could not as that feature never worked for us and support never responded to our requests for help to get it working.

MAXCDN - www.maxcdn.com
We began looking again and were directed to MaxCDN by the flowplayer guys. They gave a favorable recommendation. As a result we gave them a test-drive and have been more than pleased with their level of support, expertise, and professionalism. Our media delivery is actually a lot faster with them than it was with SimpleCDN and they have been very responsive to our needs.

Also ... their pseudo-streaming works! Not to mention we have an actual number that we can call and speak to a person not a recording. They get a double-thumbs up from us.

Please share your thoughts on the CDNs that you have tried ... this thread will really be helpful to those who are trying to make a decision in this area ...

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I've yet to try MaxCDN but have also heard good things about them. I looked around their site and can't seem to find any info on secure rtmp setups. Do you know if they offer secure streaming of any sort?

Hi Edge,

Yes I believe they do. Our network administrator was working with their technical lead on setting something along those lines up for us back during our test-drive. They have a live chat option on their website ... give that a try and get an official answer from them on that just in-case I'm mistaken.

One thing I can say is that when we've run across things that we needed, if they didn't have it in place they worked with us to get it implemented so I'm very sure they can do this.

Hi Josefebus ...

These guys are great ... I shot them an email about 5 minutes ago when I saw your post and I've already gotten a reply back. Here is the response from one of their tech guys in response to your question:

'Yes for pseudo and I think RTMP streaming. If you goto flowplayer.com u will see example code, they are now using MaxCDN for the video samples'

I hope this helps ... happy streaming!

Just to be fair on this one...

RE: SimpleCDN

Their Pseudo streaming does work and I've used it successfully (on all video formats) since I first wrote this article:

http://flowplayer.org/tutorials/introduction-to-streaming-servers.html

That article may need updating on it's price comparisons on CDN's but at the time SimpleCDN was the only feasible solution for SME's. Since then I've noticed a few more open up to lower end users.

I will emphasize that SimpleCDN's support is very bad. I've had to use it once and, in fairness, we did end up with the correct solution, however response times were slow and there was nothing in the way of making me feel like our requests/inputs were going to be taken onboard (at the time we were inquiring to secure token streaming - which still isn't an option I believe)

Of course now there's also services such as Sorenson 360 (and JW's Bits On The Run). These aren't CDN's as such but more like a "Private Youtube" with a CDN-like pricing structure.

Hi Liam,

I'm glad that you got their pseudo-streaming working. Unfortunately we weren't quite as successful.

We sent multiple requests for help and were for the most part ignored on this point so we came to the final conclusion that this feature did not work.

At any rate I'm glad you were more successful than us. We would have to give a warning to anyone considering their service as their support is definitely lacking.

Stay Away from SimpleCDN - Very Poor Review

Posted: Jun 1, 2010

Reply to: CDN Recommendations and Warnings, from AArreygue
Avoid SimpleCDN at all costs. Today I complained about their crappy service and they closed my account, deleted all my files and are now lying to PayPal when I tried to file a chargeback. I had about $35 credit on the account and they are telling PayPal they closed my account due to non-payment and a negative balance. I posted the full story on my forums here:

http://forums.cgarchitect.com/60570-warning-simplecdn-very-poor-customer-service-support.html

I would not recommend using them for anything! Run far far away. I have been searching Google and have so far found about half a dozen similar stories.
